Validating Math Learning for Geometry in Construction: A Math Badging Use Case

Join Ginger M. Reynolds, PhD, for the Validating Math Learning for Geometry in Construction: A Math Badging Use Case session at the Illinois State Board of Education Career Connections Conference on June 18, 2024, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

In this session, we will explore the benefits of using a math badging system to validate the learning that occurs on-site in a Geometry in Construction course through a combination of conventional assessments, student portfolios, and performance assessments. Geometry in Construction is a course taught by a math teacher and a CTE teacher. Students earn badges through traditional coursework and using geometric concepts as they complete a construction project. The course engages with geometry in the context of an authentic, real-world application that students experience in real-time on a job site. This session will discuss how badging allows students to show competency in mathematics through the lens of construction while ensuring appropriate rigor and addressing Common Core State Standards.

The Illinois Math Badging Initiative (IMBI) provides an alternative credentialing mechanism wherein students can certify learning gained through a broad range of sources, including coursework, independent study, summer school, and work-based learning. Participants will hear how Charleston CUSD 1 is using the system to ensure students are mastering critical geometry skills while learning outside of a traditional classroom setting in partnership with a non-math teacher.

Session participants will have the opportunity to view student portfolio work, and we will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and discuss. We aspire to offer a collaborative and dynamic exploration of innovation in validating math learning. Join us as we work to shift the math landscape to be more flexible, student-friendly, and relevant.
