Learn how regional partners in southwestern Illinois are strengthening health sciences work‑based learning for K–12 students.
- Southwestern Illinois Community College shared their immersive Health Sciences Day, a multi-department simulation that introduces students to postsecondary programs and a wide range of health‑related occupations. More than 15 health programs participate, including EMS, nursing, radiology, respiratory care, and surgical tech, offering hands-on exploration through lab tours, skills challenges, and employer engagement.
- Chester Memorial Hospital shared how the Medical Explorers Program has grown into a powerful pipeline. The program introduces students to a wide variety of healthcare roles, beyond the typical focus on doctors and nurses. Open to students who are high school freshmen through age 21, the program includes monthly hands-on health career sessions and incorporates job shadowing, industry mentorship, and scholarship opportunities.
Together, these examples illustrate how coordinated regional efforts can expand equitable access to high‑quality work‑based learning and strengthen local health sciences pathways.
